How to Verify a Chinese Truck Wheel Supplier Before You Pay
Eight checks that separate a wheel factory from a website, ordered from cheapest to dearest — and a payment structure that keeps you covered while you learn.
Most of what you need to know about a Chinese wheel supplier is public, free and readable in an afternoon: the company register shows whether it manufactures or only sells, the credit-data apps show how many people it employs and whether a court is chasing it, and customs databases show whether it has ever shipped a wheel to your market. Spend money on audits and samples only afterwards.
1. Read the business licence, not just the scan
Every Chinese company has an entry on the National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System (国家企业信用信息公示系统, gsxt.gov.cn) — official, free and Chinese-only; the Qichacha and Tianyancha apps mirror the same data. Ask the supplier for its registered Chinese name and unified social credit code, search the code, and read:
| Field | Chinese label | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Registered capital | 注册资本 · 认缴 / 实缴 | Subscribed (认缴) is a promise; paid-in (实缴) is money that exists. "RMB 10 million" with nothing paid in means RMB 0 at stake. |
| Business scope | 经营范围 | Manufacturers carry 生产 / 制造 / 加工 (production, manufacturing, processing). Sales-and-trade wording only (销售 / 贸易) is a trading company, whatever the website says. 货物进出口 = may export in its own name. |
| Establishment date | 成立日期 | Tests the "20 years of experience" claim. A group can be old while its trading arm is new — then the age belongs to the plant, which is what you verify. |
| Legal representative | 法定代表人 | The person legally accountable. Should match who signs your contract, or be explained. |
2. Public signals a website cannot fake
Four more signals from the credit-data apps decide most cases:
- Insured headcount (参保人数) — employees on social insurance in the last annual filing, the best public proxy for real staff. A rim line, presses, welding and coating cannot run on a handful of people; zero or single digits is an office, not a factory.
- Abnormal-operations list (经营异常) — a missed annual filing or an unreachable registered address.
- Enforcement and consumption-restriction records (被执行人 / 限制高消费) — a court ordered payment and it has not been made. Your deposit will service old debts first.
- Shareholder history (股东 / 变更记录) — ownership changing hands every year or two, or a new name at the same address, is the pattern of a shell discarded when complaints arrive.
3. Verify the IATF 16949 certificate through the certification body
IATF 16949 certifies a manufacturing site, so the certificate must name the plant that will make your wheels, with a scope that covers wheels. Verify it through the certification body that issued it, not the supplier's PDF. The full routine, including how to spot borrowed and expired certificates, is in the IATF 16949 verification guide.
4. Pull the export record
Bill-of-lading databases — Volza, ImportYeti, Panjiva and similar — index customs records from a number of importing countries. Search the supplier's English shipper name (ask for the exact name on its bills of lading), filter for wheels or HS 8708.70, and read:
- Destination. A supplier with a record in your region already knows the local fitments and conformity paperwork.
- Volume and rhythm. Regular container-sized shipments over years mean a working export line; one shipment three years ago means you are the experiment.
- Consignees. A competitor or a known distributor on the list means the product survived a professional buyer.
- Product descriptions. "Steel wheel 22.5×9.00" is a wheel exporter; tyres, filters and lamps with an occasional wheel is a trader.
Coverage differs by database and destination, and a manufacturer exporting through a trading company appears under the trader's name. Treat an empty result as a question, not as proof.
5. The video factory audit checklist
A live video call from the shop floor costs nothing and is the most informative check before a paid audit. Insist on live, not a recorded file:
- The rim line, running — strip coiled into a ring, butt-welded, flared and roll-formed into the rim profile.
- Disc stamping — the presses that form the disc and punch the bolt holes. Ask for the disc thickness measured on a part in your size.
- Rim-to-disc welding — fatigue cracks start here; it should look controlled, not improvised.
- The air-leak test station — no leak tester means the plant is buying tubeless wheels, not making them.
- The e-coat or paint line — tanks, conveyor, oven, and finished wheels in the colour you were quoted.
- The marking dies — the stamps that emboss brand, size and date code. A manufacturer owns dies carrying its own brand; a trader has nothing to show here.
Then run the one test that matters: choose a spot yourself. "Turn the camera left and walk to that rack." "Open the die store." A real plant walks there; a rented backdrop cannot. Ask for the gate sign too — it should match the register.

6. Buy a third-party audit for a first order
SGS, Bureau Veritas, TÜV and Intertek all sell a one-day supplier audit: an auditor visits the registered address, checks licence and certificates against originals, counts people and machines, and reports on the quality system. The fee is a few hundred US dollars plus travel. Book and pay for it yourself so the auditor reports to you, and check its headcount against the register. It is not a pre-shipment inspection — that is a separate booking once the goods are ready, covered in the inspection checklist.
7. Test the sample — and know what needs a laboratory
Ask for one wheel of the exact model you intend to order. Most of what matters fits in any workshop:
You can check
- Rim diameter, width, PCD, centre bore and offset against the drawing
- Radial and lateral runout with a dial gauge on a hub or mandrel
- Weld appearance — continuous bead, no porosity or undercut
- Coating thickness with a magnetic gauge, against the value quoted
- Finished weight against the quotation
- Stamping: brand, size, date code and load marking
Only a laboratory can check
- Cornering and radial fatigue tests (GB/T 5909, ISO 3894 or equivalent) — a rig and weeks of cycling
- Steel grade and mechanical properties
- Weld metallurgy — sectioning and hardness
- Coating adhesion and salt-spray performance
For the laboratory items, ask the manufacturer for its type-test report on your model; a plant that runs fatigue rigs has one on file. How the results relate to the rating stamped on the disc is in the load rating guide.
8. Structure the payment so a mistake stays small
The market-standard terms for a container of wheels are 30% deposit by T/T, 70% against a copy of the bill of lading. Before paying the deposit, make sure the proforma invoice (PI) or contract states:
- Your right to pre-shipment inspection before the balance falls due, with the drawing and approved sample as the standard and rework before loading as the remedy.
- A beneficiary account in the same legal name as the licence. Requests to pay a personal account or an unrelated Hong Kong entity are how deposits disappear. Confirm bank details by voice on a number you already had.
- The producing plant named when you buy through a trader, plus the exact model, finish, marking and packing you approved.
The wider order process is in how to import truck wheels from China.
Three kinds of supplier, three ways to verify
The register tells you which of the three you are dealing with; the table tells you what to verify and ask next.
| Type | How to recognise it | What to verify | What to ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer | Scope includes 生产 / 制造; insured headcount in the dozens to hundreds; registered address is the plant; IATF certificate in its own name. | Certificate site = licence address = the plant on the video call; export records under its own name or its trading arm. | "Which line makes my size — can I see it running?" "Send the type-test report for this model." |
| Factory-owned trading company | Scope is trade / import-export; small headcount; the shareholder field leads back to the manufacturer or its owners. | The ownership link on the register; the manufacturer's certificate with the plant named; direct access to the plant. | "Show me the shareholding link." "Name the producing plant on the PI." "Can I video-call the plant?" |
| Independent trader | Scope is trade only; office address; no wheel certificate; export history spans unrelated products. | The factory it sources from — with every check on this page — and that the sample came from there. | "Which factory, and will you name it on the PI and packing list?" "What if that factory changes?" |
What disqualifies a supplier is not its type but refusing the checks: a manufacturer that will not show its line, a trader that will not name its plant.
We welcome every check on this page
Zhongyuan is an Anyang-based steel group rolling since the 1990s, and the wheels we supply are produced under IATF 16949:2016 — certificate No. 0504999 (manufacturing of steel and aluminum wheels) and group certificate No. 0599434. Both copies go out with every quotation, with the producing plant named, and we would rather you verified them through the issuing certification body than took our word. Live video calls from the wheel shop, third-party audits and a PI that writes in your inspection rights are all standard. Scans are on Quality & Certificates; the group's history is on About Us.
Frequently asked questions
Can I verify a Chinese wheel supplier without reading Chinese?
Yes. The deciding fields are numbers and dates; a translation app handles the labels. Search by the unified social credit code.
How much does a third-party factory audit in China cost?
Typically a few hundred US dollars plus travel for a one-day supplier audit by SGS, Bureau Veritas, TÜV or Intertek. Pre-shipment inspection is a separate booking.
Is a trading company a bad wheel supplier?
Not by itself. The failure mode is a trader that will not name its producing plant. Verify that plant as you would a manufacturer, and get its name onto the PI.
What is the single fastest check on a Chinese wheel supplier?
Business scope plus insured headcount on the credit register. Sales-only wording or zero headcount ends the conversation in five minutes.
