Steel Wheel Load Ratings for Trucks & Buses, Explained
What the rating actually promises, how to size it from your axle loads, typical ranges by wheel size — and how disc thickness and finished weight expose a wheel that was built down to a price.
What a load rating is
A wheel's load rating is the maximum static load, in kilograms per wheel, that the wheel is designed and fatigue-tested to carry continuously at rated inflation pressure. It is established by dynamic radial and cornering fatigue testing (GB/T 5909, ISO 3894 and equivalent standards) — millions of load cycles on a test rig, not a one-off strength test. Serious manufacturers stamp the rating on the disc face together with the size and date code; a wheel without a load stamping is, for practical purposes, unrated.
Sizing from the axle down
The arithmetic is short: required rating per wheel ≥ axle rating ÷ number of wheels on the axle.

Then add judgment. Ratings assume rated loads on reasonable roads. Fleets that run chronically overloaded, on broken pavement, or on long gradients with heavy braking should specify the next rating class up — the cost difference per wheel is small; a fatigue crack in service is not. Steer axles deserve particular respect: a steer-wheel failure is the one you cannot drive through.

What actually creates the rating
Two wheels of identical size can differ by a full rating class. The difference lives in four places:
- Disc thickness — on 22.5" wheels, roughly 11 mm for light on-highway duty up to 14 mm for heavy and off-highway ratings. Ask for the number; it is not a secret.
- Steel grade — dedicated wheel steels (380CL/440CL class) are made for cyclic loading; generic structural steel is not, whatever the thickness.
- Weld quality — the rim butt weld and disc-to-rim weld are where fatigue cracks start; process control here is exactly what IATF 16949 audits.
- Forming accuracy — runout and profile tolerance decide how evenly the load is carried; sloppy forming concentrates stress the calculation never saw.
Finished weight is the buyer's cross-check on all four. Steel wheels are priced and built per kilogram: a quotation dramatically lighter than the pack at the same claimed rating means material came out of somewhere — usually the disc. Ask for weight and disc thickness on every quotation and the arithmetic protects you by itself.
