Tube-Type vs Tubeless Truck Wheels: The Difference, and When to Switch
How a 20" multi-piece tube-type rim differs from a 22.5" one-piece tubeless wheel — safety, weight, tyre supply, cost per kilometre — and what a 20"-to-22.5" conversion involves beyond the wheel.
Two rim systems, not two versions of one wheel
A tube-type truck wheel carries a bias (cross-ply) tyre with an inner tube and a flap, on a rim with a 5° bead seat. The rim is not one piece: a flat-base (FB) or semi drop-centre (SDC) section-steel profile, closed by a detachable side ring and/or split lock ring fitted after the tyre goes on. Diameters run in whole inches — 16", 20" and 24" — matched to tyres such as 7.50-16, 10.00-20, 12.00-20 and 12.00-24.
A tubeless truck wheel is a one-piece 15° drop-centre (DC) rim welded to the disc. The tyre bead seals directly against the 15° taper; there is no tube, no flap and no ring. Diameters run in half inches — 16.5", 17.5", 19.5", 22.5" and 24.5" — matched to radial tyres such as 11R22.5, 12R22.5, 315/80R22.5 and 385/65R22.5. The half-inch is deliberate: a 22.5 tyre will not seat on a 20" rim or vice versa, so the systems cannot be mixed by mistake.

Safety: the lock ring is the issue
The multi-piece rim is why tube-type wheels are being retired from regulated markets. If a ring is not fully seated at inflation it can separate with explosive force — a known cause of workshop fatalities, and why US rules (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.177) require a restraining cage, clip-on chuck and remote gauge when inflating multi-piece rims. Corroded, bent or mismatched rings, or rings from a different manufacturer, raise that risk further.
On the road the failure modes differ too. A punctured tube tears and loses air fast — at highway speed and full load that is a blow-out. A tubeless tyre punctured in the tread usually deflates slowly because there is no tube to tear; the driver has time to stop, and a small nail hole can be plugged without demounting. Tubeless is not risk-free — a 15° rim still needs inspection for cracks at the valve hole and bead seat — but the lock ring's sudden failure mode is absent.
Weight, heat and fuel
Wheel for wheel, the difference is smaller than buyers expect: in our catalogue the 20-7.50V tube-type wheel (10×26, H1) lists at 43.6 kg and the 22.5×9.00 tubeless wheel (10×32.5, JSR22) at 43.8 kg. The saving is in what goes on the wheel — tube, flap, side ring, lock ring and the heavier bias carcass are all removed. Per position that is several kilograms, returned as payload.
Heat is the quieter advantage. A bias tyre with a tube runs hotter than a tubeless radial: the tube chafes against the casing, the bias carcass flexes more, and the multi-piece rim and flap trap heat instead of conducting it away. Lower running temperature is what lets a radial casing last longer and be retreaded. The fuel saving of radial tubeless over bias tube-type on long paved routes is typically quoted in single-digit percent (market reference; it depends on tyre model, load and road surface).
Tyre supply is the real deciding factor
Whichever wheel you stock, the local tyre market decides whether it sells. Radial tubeless is the global default: new heavy trucks from Chinese, Japanese and European makers ship on 22.5 (19.5 or 17.5 for lighter classes), and replacement tyre volume follows the vehicle parc. Bias tube-type tyres in 10.00-20, 11.00-20, 12.00-20 and 12.00-24 are still produced in China and India and remain on the shelf across East Africa, South Asia and parts of Latin America — but that shelf shrinks each year and lead times on rarer sizes lengthen.
For an importer this cuts both ways: tube-type wheels are a legitimate replacement line while the tyres are available locally, but a poor line to build a business on. Tubeless 22.5 wheels — above all the 22.5×9.00 and 22.5×8.25 sizes carrying 12R22.5, 315/80R22.5 and 11R22.5 — are where replacement demand is growing.
Cost: what actually differs
At purchase a tube-type position is usually cheaper: bias tyres cost less and tube, flap and rings are cheap parts. Over the life of the position the picture reverses on paved routes: the radial tubeless tyre runs more kilometres, retreads, uses less fuel and loses fewer casings to heat. On broken or unpaved roads with frequent sidewall cuts the gap narrows: casings are lost to damage before their mileage advantage is realised, and roadside tube repair is cheap. The honest answer is per route, not per country — a Mombasa–Kampala highway fleet and a quarry haul fleet nearby will reach opposite conclusions.
Converting a 20" tube-type fleet to 22.5 tubeless: what really changes
Fleets in East Africa are mid-way through this switch, and the most common mistake in the enquiries we receive is treating it as a wheel purchase. It is an assembly change, and the wheel is its cheapest part.
What must match the hub
- Bolt pattern and PCD — order the 22.5 wheel in the outgoing 20" wheel's pattern (e.g. 10×335, 10×285.75, 8×275); check the PCD & bolt pattern chart
- Bolt form — spherical or flat-seat nut (H1, JSR22, ISR22 etc.) must match the existing studs and nuts
- Centre bore — the wheel must locate on the hub spigot
- Offset — must preserve dual spacing and inner clearance; the catalogue lists offset per model
What must change together
- Every tyre on the vehicle, including the spare — 20" bias tyres cannot be reused on 22.5 rims
- Tyre size chosen for equivalent overall diameter, so gearing and speedometer stay correct (10.00-20 is commonly replaced by 11R22.5, 11.00-20 by 12R22.5 — confirm with the tyre maker's data book)
- Tubeless valves, and workshop practice for bead seating and inflation
- Never tube-type and tubeless on the same axle; convert at least a whole axle, preferably the whole vehicle

A fleet that identifies its hub correctly can usually convert without touching the hubs, once offset is checked (it differs by a few millimetres between the series). Where it cannot, find out before the order, not after the container lands.
When tube-type still makes sense
- Bias-tyre fleets with stock and supply contracts — if the fleet runs 10.00-20 and 12.00-20 with a reliable supplier, replacement wheels should match; partial conversion creates two inventories.
- Extreme roads and chronic overloading — where sidewall cuts and overload kill casings before they wear out, the cheaper bias assembly and cheap tube repair can be the lower-cost position.
- Routes served by tube-only repair points — if roadside shops along the corridor have tube patches but no bead breaker or compressor, a tubeless failure means waiting for recovery.
- 24" quarry and mining duty — 12.00-24 bias tyres on 24" tube-type wheels remain standard on many off-highway tippers.
